Philadelphia bulk trash rules: what the city takes and what it doesn't

The city will not take every couch, mattress or renovation pile. Here is how to tell when bulk trash is enough and when you need a crew.

Bulk trash is not unlimited

Philadelphia's sanitation department sets its own limits on large items left at the curb, and those limits change. A mattress, a sofa or a load of renovation debris can be rejected, ticketed or left sitting. Check the current Streets Department rules for your address before you put anything out.

What people are often stuck with

Mattresses, box springs, appliances with refrigerant, construction debris, tires, paint and a garage full of mixed junk are the loads that most often stay on the sidewalk. Hazardous items such as wet paint, chemicals, propane, asbestos and medical waste are not accepted by the city or by us.

When a pickup is the simpler path

If the items are inside, up stairs, or more than a couple of pieces, a same-day crew keeps the sidewalk clear and the neighbors happier. You do not have to wait for a bulk week or drag a sofa down from a third floor.

Still not sure
